Janne Virkkala aloitti sellonsoiton Keski-Pohjanmaan musiikkiopistossa ja jatkoi opintojaan Sibelius-Akatemiassa, mistä hän on valmistunut musiikin maisteriksi. Lisäksi hän on osallistunut lukuisille mestarikursseille Iso- Britanniassa opettajinaan mm. Steven Isserlis ja Steven Doane.
Vuosina 1993- 2009 Virkkala toimi soolosellistinä Norrlannin Oopperan sinfoniaorkesterissa Uumajassa Ruotsissa. Hän on myös vieraillut soolosellistinä useissa Ruotsin orkestereissa sekä Keski-Pohjanmaan Kamariorkesterissa ja osallistunut kiertueille mm. Japaniin, Kiinaan, USA:han, Englantiin, Saksaan, Ranskaan, Italiaan ja Itävaltaan. Hän on tehnyt nauhoituksia Ruotsin radiolle mm. pianisti Mattias Holmströmin kanssa sekä triona klarinetisti Bengt Sandströmin liityttyä joukkoon sekä konsertoinut useissa eri kamarimusiikkikokoonpanoissa Suomessa ja Ruotsissa.
Virkkala on esiintynyt solistina Nuorten solistien konserteissa sekä Radion Sinfoniaorkesterin että Kokkolan orkesterin kanssa, sekä myöhemmin Norrlannin Oopperan orkesterin, Dala Sinfoniettan ja Dalarnas Orkesterföreningenin ja Vaasan kaupunginorkesterin kanssa. Kotimaahan paluun jälkeen työpaikkoja ovat olleet Jakobstads Sinfoniettan sellisti 2009-2012, Vaasan kaupunginorkesterin soolosellisti 2011- 2014 ja Keski-Pohjanmaan Kamariorkesterin sellisti 2015 alkaen. Hänen instrumenttinsa on englantilainen William Forster vuodelta 1780.
Janne Virkkala started playing the cello at the Central Ostrobothnia School of Music and continued his studies at the Sibelius Academy, where he graduated with a master’s degree in music. In addition, he has taken part in numerous master classes in the United Kingdom, for example with Steven Isserlis and Steven Doane as his teachers.
From 1993 to 2009, Virkkala performed as a soloist with the Norrland Opera Symphony Orchestra in Umeå, Sweden. He has also visited as a soloist in several Swedish orchestras and the Ostrobothnia Chamber Orchestra and participated in tours e.g. Japan, China, USA, England, Germany, France, Italy and Austria. He has made recordings for Swedish radio for instance with pianist Mattias Holmström and as a trio after clarinetist Bengt Sandström and has given concerts in several different chamber music ensembles in Finland and Sweden.
Virkkala has performed as a soloist in concerts of young soloists with both the Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Kokkola Orchestra, and later with the Norrland Opera Orchestra, the Dala Sinfonietta and the Dalarnas Orkesterföreningen and the Vaasa City Orchestra. After his return to Finland, his jobs have included being the cellist of the Jakobstads Sinfonietta 2009-2012, the solo cellist of the Vaasa City Orchestra 2011-2014 and the cellist of the Central Ostrobothnia Chamber Orchestra since 2015. His instrument is an English William Forster from 1780.
